چکیده

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the distribution of turbulence intensity and the localization of stenoses inside the venous anastomosis of arteriovenous (A-V) grafts. Turbulent flow measurements were conducted inside an upscaled end-to-side graft model under pulsatile flow condition. The pulsatile flow waveforms had maximum, minimum and mean Reynolds numbers of 2500, 1200 and 1800, respectively based on the graft diameter. The distribution of the velocity and turbulence intensity was measured at several locations in the plane of the bifurcation of the model. Turbulence intensity was found to be greatest downstream of the anastomosis.

Transitional flow at the venous anastomosis of an arteriovenous graft: potential activation of the ERK1/2 mechanotransduction pathway.

We present experimental and computational results that describe the level, distribution, and importance of velocity fluctuations within the venous anastomosis of an arteriovenous graft. The motivation of this work is to understand better the importance of biomechanical forces in the development of intimal hyperplasia within these grafts. Steady-flow in vitro studies (Re = 1060 and 1820) were co...

Flow-induced vein-wall vibration in an arteriovenous graft

The hemodynamic environment of an arteriovenous (AV) graft differs from that of arterial grafts because mean flow rates are typically 10 times greater. This increased flow rate can create a weakly turbulent state, which alters the biomechanical environment greatly and may play a role in AV graft failure. A canine animal study was conducted to simulate the hemodynamic environment of a human AV g...

Nf-gvein: Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Based Modelling of Flow Field inside Graft- To-vein Connection under Steady Flow Conditions

This paper presents the application of the adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to a model of the flow field inside an in vitro arteriovenous (AV) graft-to-vein connection implanted to the kidney patients. A model based on ANFIS is proposed. Its relevant steps oriented to find the optimal AV graft angle are given. The advantage of this neuro-fuzzy hybrid approach is that it does not re...

High Flow Conditions Increase Connexin43 Expression in a Rat Arteriovenous and Angioinductive Loop Model

Gap junctions are involved in vascular growth and their expression pattern is modulated in response to hemodynamic conditions. They are clusters of intercellular channels formed by connexins (Cx) of which four subtypes are expressed in the cardiovascular system, namely Cx37, Cx40, Cx43 and Cx45. We hypothesize that high flow conditions affect vascular expression of Cx in vivo. To test this hypo...

Endothelial cell activation by hemodynamic shear stress derived from arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis access.

Intimal hyperplasia (IH) is the first cause of failure of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects on endothelial cells (ECs) of shear stress waveforms derived from AVF areas prone to develop IH. We used a cone-and-plate device to obtain real-time control of shear stress acting on EC cultures. We exposed human umbilical vein ECs for 48 h to dif...
